ALL PLUMS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE BAREROOTED

Plums are the most popular of the stone fruits and they are also the easiest to grow. The majority of the plum trees in our collection were most propagated from the former Nash orchard in Co. Westmeath. As with pears, plum are not as well suited to the Irish climate as are apples benefiting from sheltered warmer microclimates. Plums need a moisture-retentive but free draining soil. Humus can be introduced into light soils which easily dry out.

Plum Flowering

Plums flower very early in the season and that means that cropping can be very disappointing and irregular in low lying or exposed sites. Relatively high ground in the garden and a spot which gets lots of sun should be chosen if you plan to grow a dessert plum.

Plum Rootstocks
Saint Julien 'A'     This is a semi vigorous rootstock and it is the most widely used plum rootstock. It has a good crop influence, with tress tending to come into bearing after 3-4 years and it is the rootstock to use if conditions are less than ideal. St. Julien trees grow to between 2.5 metres and 4.5 metres (7 ft and 14 ft) and should be spaced approximately 4 metres (12 ft) apart.
