Cooking pear trees

Raised in France in 1665, this is one of the oldest pears in cultivation. The fruit is very large and round. It is green, tinted with red and has a crisp, musky flavour. The growth is vigorous and spreading and it is one of the best cooking pears. It is a prolific cropper when grown as a standard or on quince rootstock. The pears should be picked in October but are at their best the following January through April. This is late-flowering and a triploid, i.e. it needs two other pear trees for successful pollination.
