Our latest project is the construction of a new Seed Bank and processing and drying facility. We will have a seed drying tunnel, a viewing area and within the seed bank itself there will be a number of different areas for the processing of the seed from farm to finish. These areas include a sorting and threshing area, a dehumidifying room, a packing and sealing room, a long term freezer facility, a small laboratory and a seed stock room.

We are very grateful for your help so that we can realize this very important facility. This facility will see us able to increase the amount and quality of seed we can produce as demand grows. If you are interested in running an event to fundraise for this project please let us know.

  • Seedsaving

This involves firstly growing out those seeds and then harvesting seeds from the strongest plants which have germinated and grown. The next stage is then continuing this process until there is an adequate stock of viable seed in storage and in the field.  The costs associated with this are often high due to the time taken and the expertise required by our experts here at Irish Seed Savers in addition to costs such as maintenance. We are grateful for any donations received for this important work.

  • Recovering Traditional Native Grains

To date, 25 native Irish oats and several wheat, barley and ryes have been collected. Some of these long lost Irish grains were found as far afield asRussiaandNorway. Over the years, Michael, has returned to production an irreplaceable Irish resource. More Irish native varieties are being tracked down worldwide. Their potential for animal and human food, bedding and thatch is enormous.
