This workshop will explore the principles behind Close To Nature Forest Management, also known as Continuous Cover Forest Management (CCF) and its practical application to Irish Woodlands. It is of particular relevance to farmers and small scale woodland owners. In essence CCF allows for the development of mixed woodlands into stable and vibrant ecosystems that are capable of providing a livelihood, for example, timber, ecotourism, edible forest produce and game. It also provides environmental and wildlife protection within the woodland and encourages the landowner and surrounding communities to protect and retain forests in the long term. CCF is relatively new to Ireland but has been practised widely throughout Europe for centuries.

The day will include a visit to the local Raheen Estate. The tutor has assisted the owner with the conversion of the estate’s woodland to CCF management over the past five years. The course will begin with the conservation management of an ancient Oak area and then move on to conifers conversion and finally the maintenance and thinning of young broadleaf trees. Observations during the woodland visit will result in learning about functioning forest ecosystems and ultimately on how to apply this knowledge to other woodlands through the practice of sustainable forest management.

The course will be run by the Teagasc Forestry Advisor, in collaboration with Teagasc.

Please wear warm / waterproof clothing and suitable footwear. This course partially takes place in a local woodland.
